  • 2000
Early part of 2000, when a program evaluation aimed to analyze the impacts on Mexican consumers and the national economy from energy efficiency standards on residential refrigerators and window air conditioners that were aligned, or “harmonized” with U.S. standards were initiated.
  • 2011
Year when a standard for mini-split air conditioners was implemented and its impacts were also quantified and analysed.
  • 17-27%
increase in average efficiency of Mexican refrigerators as a result of the minimum energy performance standards (in Spanish, Normas Oficiales Mexicanas or NOMs) was observed over the period analysed.
  • 4%
increase in average efficiency for window air conditioners.
  • 7%
increase in average efficiency for split system air conditioners.
  • 5 TWh
estimated savings of electricity per year in 2014 as a result of these standards, thats roughly equivalent to two 500 MW power plants.
  • 23 MT
of reduction in CO2 emissions from 2000 to 2014.
  • 40 billion
savings in Mexican pesos for Mexican consumers between 2002 and 2014, resulting from electricity saved by the standards (about US$ 3 billion at 2015 exchange rates).
