Poor health a big trigger for suicides in India

  • 385,000 people
    troubled by illness, committed suicide between 2001 and 2015, according to the annual reports prepared the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)
  • 3 people
    commit suicide every hour as they are unable to deal with their illness(es).
  • 237,000 people
    committed suicide because they were suffering from chronic illnesses during that period. Of which:
  • 118,000 people
    ended their lives as they were suffering from mental disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, dementia and schizophrenia.
  • 11,099 people
    suffered from cancer.
  • 9,415 people
    were victims of HIV-AIDS.
  • 9,036 people
    suffered from paralysis.
  • 64%
    of all suicides amounting to 247,085 people were from 5 states: Maharashtra (63,013), Tamil Nadu (50,178), Andhra Pradesh (48376), Karnataka (48,053) and Kerala (37,465).
