De-silting of reservoir a double boon for farmers of Maharashtra's Narkhed tehsil

  • 13.22 hectares
    of the Sipi-Khapa reservoir in Narkhed tehsil of Nagpur district has been de-silted. The project was taken up under the Maharashtra govt's 'Gaalmukt Dharan, Gaalyukt Shivar Yojana’ (silt-free reservoirs, fertile farmland) scheme, part of the larger Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan.
  • 10.88 hectares
    Reduced spread of the reservoir due to accumulation of silt since it was constructed in 1978.
  • 300 hectares
    of farmland on which the silt removed from the reservoir has been used.
  • 50
    farmers from Sawargaon, Yenikoni and other villages have transported the silt. The transportation was arranged with the help and intervention of Dr Archana Pathare, Sub-Divisional Officer, Katol.
  • 30% - 35%
    Estimated increase in production of oranges due to use of the fertile silt.
  • 53 TCM
    (trillion cubic metre) of the reservoir's water storage capacity has been restored.
