  • 4,350 km
Length of what is certainly the world’s largest water-transfer project. It is unprecedented both in the volume of water to be transferred and the distance to be traveled, about the distance between the two coasts of America. The US, Israel, and South Africa are home to long-distance water transfer systems, but none on this scale.
  • 44.8 billion cubic meters
Volume of water that will be moved each year from the wetter south of the country to the north, in order to address water shortages in many of China’s northern cities, including Beijing. This volume is more than there is in the River Thames in London.
  • 500,000
Approximate number of people will have to be relocated.
  • $60 billion
Estimated cost of the project and expected to end up being much higher. This is civil engineering on a truly grand scale.
