U.S. coal fired power plant closure announcements in 2018

First Energy announced that its Allegheny Energy Supply subsidiary today notified PJM Interconnection (PJM), the regional transmission organization, of its plan to deactivate the coal-fired Pleasants Power Station in Willow Island, West Virginia.  The 2-unit, 1,300 MW plant will be sold or closed on January 1, 2019.  The plant deactivation is subject to PJM's review for reliability impacts, if any.

Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO announced it would retire Units 14, 15, 17 and 18 of its 1,944 MW R.M. Schahfer Generating Station located in Wheatfield, Indiana no later than 2023. “Technology and market changes continue to transform the energy industry, opening more competitive options and it’s the primary driver of the changes being considered for our system.” - NIPSCO president, Violet Sistovaris.

American Electric Power (AEP) announced it will shut down 720 MW Oklaunion plant near Vernon as it couldn't compete in the market run by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). The plant will be shut down between April and Oct. of 2020, pending approvals. Approximately 80 workers would be affected by the closure.

Entergy Arkansas announced it will stop using coal at Unit 1 - 465 MW and Unit 2 - 469 MW - a total of 934 MW of operating capacity - of its White Bluff Power Plant in Redfield, Arkansas. The utility reached a settlement with environmental groups filed in the federal district court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. A proposal to phase out coal had originally been made by Entergy in 2015.
