Suchitwa Sagaram: Kerala fishermen fight plastic polluting the sea

    Launch of the Suchitwa Sagaram (Clean Sea) project by Kerala’s fisheries minister J. Mercykutty Amma. Under the project, fishermen would not only stop dumping plastic waste into the sea but also bring back huge amounts of plastic they end up scooping along with the fish.

    of plastic, including 10 tonnes of plastic bags and bottles that has been removed from the Arabian Sea since the launch of the project, according to Johnson Premkumar, programme officer for training with the Suchitwa initiative.

    out of a total 24 fishing harbours - Sakthikulangara - where the initiative is being implemented. 5 trawlers and 28 people from the local fishing community are engaged.
