On 28 Jul, levels filled to 75% of capacity and crossed 1,800 feet level - the first time in last 3 years that this has happened in the month of July. Considered the lifeline of hydro power in the state, the reservoir provides water to the Sharavathi generating station, having an installed capacity of 1,035 MW.

The dam irrigates over 1.5 lakh hectares of land in Periyapatna, Hunsur, K.R. Nagar and Arakalagud in Hassan.

Tungabhadra reservoir is an inter-state project catering to the drinking water and irrigation needs of six districts — Ballari, Koppal and Raichur in Karnataka and Anantapur, Kadapa and Kurnool districts in Andhra Pradesh. In addition to the canals, farmers along the bank of the river downstream of the reservoir, depend on the river for drinking water and for irrigation.
