Live storage and water levels in reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh [31 Aug 2020]

215.66 TMC
Srisailam Dam. At 99.93% of its live capacity of 215.81 TMC compared to 185.55 TMC at the same time last year. Water levels at 885 ft as against FRL of 885 ft. 28 Aug: Spillway discharge of flood stopped at Srisailam with inflows receding to 1.24 lakh cusecs. About 31,000 cusecs is, however, being let into the river course after power generation in the right bank hydel station.

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. At 98% of its live capacity of 312.05 TMC compared to 306.90 TMC same day last year. Water levels at 588 ft as against FRL of 590 ft. The dam, built across the Krishna river, is situated on the border of Nalgonda district in Telangana and Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. The dam provides irrigation water to the Nalgonda, Suryapet, Krishna, Khammam, West Godavari, Guntur and Prakasam districts along with hydro electricity generation. 28 Aug: Spillway discharge of flood stopped at around 5 pm as inflows fall below 45,000 cusecs. About 25,000 cusecs is being let into river after power generation. At Jurala, 14,400 cusecs flood is being released from two spillway gates.

Dr. KLRS Pulichintala Dam. At 100% of its live capacity of 45.77 TMC compared to 43.93 TMC on this day last year. Levels have been rising due to release of floodwaters from Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar. The project is a multipurpose project serving irrigation needs, a 120 MW hydro power generation and flood control. It is a crucial irrigation facility for farmers in 4 coastal districts of West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam covering 13 lakh acres.

Somasila Dam. At 55% of its live capacity of 78 TMC compared to 19.42 TMC on this day last year. It has been receiving inflows from Pothireddypadu head regulator as well as 19,597 cusecs of  water from the Krishna. Authorities are letting out water to the Kandaleru reservoir. A major water body in the Nellore district, water from the reservoir is used to irrigate 9.25 lakh acres of land. It is the main source of drinking water for Kavali municipality of nearly 1.2 lakh population.

Almatti Dam. At 97% of its live capacity of 123.08 tmc. Was at 123.23 tmc on the same day last year. Water levels at 519 m as against FRL of 519 m. The Central Water Commission has forecast increase in inflows into both Alamatti and Narayanpur dams, which are already full, leading to likely heavy inflows downstream into Jurala, Srisailam and then Nagarjunasagar. On 09 Aug alone, there was an inflow of 185,001 cusecs!! And in order to regulate levels, 181,922 cusecs was released.

79.30 TMC
Sriram Sagar Dam (aka Pochampadu Dam). At 87% of its live capacity of 90.31 TMC. Was at ? TMC on this day last year. Built across the Godavari river in Telangana it serves irrigational needs in Karimnagar, Warangal, Adilabad and Nizamabad districts. It also provides drinking water to Warangal city. There is a hydroelectric plant working at the dam site, with 4 turbines each with 9 MW capacity generating 36 MW.
