Annual diesel consumption on account of these pumps costing an estimated $1 billion. Diesel consumption for irrigation decreased from 4.3 million tonnes in 2018, as the use of electricity-run and solar-powered irrigation pumps is on the rise. According to the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), this is a 21% decrease in diesel consumption in the sector compared to 2018.

German supplier Raach Solar and its Bangladeshi partner Power Utility Bangladesh Ltd secure 2 tenders worth a total $9 million to install 705 solar-powered irrigation pumps in the north-western Bogra district. The pumps will be financed by Asian Development Bank (ADB) grant under the development lender's power system efficiency improvement project. The pumps were proposed by the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board and the contract awards ratified by the government's cabinet committee on procurement on 08 Oct 2020.
