Europe: Coal fired power plant closure announcements in 2021

  • 2,600 MW
    of coal power plant capacity, across 7 units in 2 plants, will over time, be shuttered or transition to alternate fuel sources, based on decisions announced so far this year.

    Czech based CEZ Group announced it will close its 600 MW Dětmarovice coal plant, located in Ostrava, by the end of the 2022-23 heating season at the latest. Units 2, 3 and 4 each of 200 MW generation capacity will be shuttered. The 200 MW Unit 2 was retired in 2019. The average daily consumption of fuel per one unit is about 1,600 tons of coal, this figure represents approx. 32 railway wagons.

    EDF Energy confirms West Burton A will close in September 2022, two years ahead of British government's deadline for coal-fired power. The 4 unit, 2000 MW plant is capable of generating enough electricity for approximately 3.7 million UK homes and has so far produced enough for all the homes in the UK for 4.5 years. At its peak there were 750 people employed. Today there are around 170.
