Size of the EU’s Global Gateway, a($340bn) infrastructure-development plan billed as an “alternative” to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The bloc will fund the scheme with grants, loans and guarantees to other countries from EU institutions, national development banks and the private sector. The EU says that the scheme will be more transparent and won’t leave recipient countries in debt, as they often are to China.
